Pediatric Food Allergy & Intolerance

Itís difficult enough to deal with a food allergy as an adult. A child with a food allergy can be even more difficult sometimes, because itís harder to tell whatís causing the issue.

Food allergies or food intolerance can both range from the mild to the severe, and determining the cause can often be complex. These types of conditions are on the rise across the world, especially in children. As part of the Center for Advanced Digestive Care, our physicians specializing in pediatric food allergies and intolerances at the Komansky Center for Children's Health/Weill Cornell Medical Center are supported by a multidisciplinary team who help diagnose pediatric patients and develop unique treatment plans for each case.

Pediatric care at our Center includes several wellness and support services to help patients and families fully manage their care. As an example, conditions such as celiac disease, lactose intolerance, and many food allergies can lead to nutritional deficiencies due to a modified diet. Nutritional counseling provided by the Center can help identify strategies to ensure all required nutrients are still received, even when certain foods must be cut out.

An important aspect of the Center for Advanced Digestive Careís patient-centered care mission is educating young patients and their caregivers. In the current age of increasing food intolerance and a higher prevalence of allergies, it is important for patients and families to understand their condition in relation to their daily life. Why a reaction happens, life strategies for adapting to newly diagnosed conditions, and what to do if oneís condition is triggered are all covered by our team. Through knowledge and everyday steps, a patient and those involved in their care can improve quality of life for pediatric patients with a food intolerance or allergies.
